If your Shopify store ships to the United States, your products have probably been eligible to appear in ChatGPT since March 2026. Shopify switched Agentic Storefronts on by default for eligible stores, and Shopify Catalog now passes your titles, descriptions, images, prices and stock levels to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google's AI Mode and the Gemini app. You did not have to install an app or sign anything new.
Eligible and recommended are different things. On 10 July 2026, a day after a model update, ChatGPT's shopping answers swung hard towards products that arrive through structured feeds. The AI visibility firm Profound counted the merchants ChatGPT surfaced falling from 13,524 to 10,607 within days. Catalog data decides which brands keep their place: the model needs specific facts to work with.
Below: what is live in each market, how a product travels from your admin into an AI answer, which fields matter, what you cannot control yet, and what brands in the UK, Canada, Australia and Asia should do while US shoppers get the first wave.
Which AI channels are Shopify products in, and in which countries?
Shopify announced Agentic Storefronts in its Winter '26 Edition on 10 December 2025, naming ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. On 24 March 2026 it confirmed that products were discoverable in ChatGPT by default for eligible merchants. The Shopify Help Center now lists ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta surfaces. Perplexity was in the original announcement but is not on the current list, so do not plan around it.
The catch is geography. Every channel is tied to US buyers for now. ChatGPT is the most open: Shopify says your store can be based outside the United States as long as it sells to customers there. Google AI Mode and Gemini go further and require the store itself to be US-based. Shopify's line is that when its AI partners expand to more regions, merchants will be ready by default.
On by default also means no new bill. Shopify says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT beyond your standard payment processing. Brands that do not run their store on Shopify can join the same catalog through the Agentic plan, which Shopify made publicly available in March 2026, so expect more competitors in the same answers, including brands that sell mainly through their own non-Shopify sites.
| Market | ChatGPT via Shopify Catalog | Microsoft Copilot | Google AI Mode and Gemini via Shopify | What shoppers there see today |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| US | Live, on by default for eligible stores | Live; direct checkout shown to US shoppers | Live for US-based stores selling to US buyers | Shopify Catalog products across all four AI surfaces |
| UK | Only if the store also sells to US buyers | US shoppers only | Not yet; Google says UCP checkout reaches the UK after Canada and Australia | ChatGPT shopping answers built from other feeds, retailers and the web |
| Canada | Only if the store also sells to US buyers | US shoppers only | Google says UCP checkout arrives in the coming months | As UK |
| Australia | Only if the store also sells to US buyers | US shoppers only | Google says UCP checkout arrives in the coming months | As UK |
| Asia (Singapore, Japan, India, SEA) | Only if the store also sells to US buyers | US shoppers only | No announced date | As UK; ChatGPT Ads now run in Japan, India, Singapore and much of SEA |

How does a product get from Shopify into a ChatGPT answer?
Shopify Catalog sits in the middle. Shopify says it infers categories, extracts attributes, consolidates variants and keeps price and inventory current, then syndicates the result to each AI partner. It describes the catalog as holding billions of products from millions of merchants. You do not submit anything; your admin data is the feed.
On ChatGPT's side, a product appears when the model judges it relevant to what the shopper asked. OpenAI's help documentation says shopping results are selected independently and are not ads. They draw on structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers, such as price, descriptions and reviews, weighed against the query and the options available. ChatGPT Ads exist as a separate product, and OpenAI keeps them apart from the organic results.
Checkout changed along the way. When OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in September 2025, more than a million Shopify merchants were billed as coming soon to buy-in-chat. On 24 March 2026 OpenAI stepped back, saying the first version did not offer the level of flexibility it wanted, and let merchants use their own checkout instead. Walmart told Wired that in-chat purchases converted at a third of the rate of click-outs. For Shopify stores, a ChatGPT shopper now finishes on your checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser on mobile or a new tab on the web, with your branding and payment methods intact.
Which catalog fields decide whether ChatGPT picks your product?
OpenAI does not publish the weighting. It does publish the shape of the data its systems ask for. OpenAI's product feed specification, used by retailers that connect directly through the Agentic Commerce Protocol, lists nine required fields and a long tail of optional ones. Shopify Catalog fills the equivalent fields from your admin, so the quality of your product data is the quality of your feed.
A quick way to audit this is to export your products to CSV and sort by the empty columns. In most catalogs we review, the gaps cluster in the same places: missing barcodes, no product category, one image shared across every colour, and descriptions written as brand copy with no measurements. An answer engine needs those fields when a shopper asks for something specific, and they cost the least to fix.
| Field | Why it matters for selection | Where to fix it in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Title (150 characters max in the OpenAI spec) | The first match against what the shopper typed. Needs product type, key attribute and variant detail | Product title: keep the brand name, add the plain descriptor ("merino crew sock, cushioned") |
| Description (5,000 characters max) | OpenAI asks for a factual description. Specs, materials, sizing and use cases give the model facts to repeat | Product description. Shopify requires legal disclosures in the first 6,000 characters |
| Product category | Puts you in the right comparison set | Standard product category in the product editor |
| GTIN, MPN and brand | Lets systems match your item to reviews and listings elsewhere | Barcode field on every variant, plus the vendor field |
| Variant attributes | Answers requests like "navy, size 10, waterproof" | Options and category metafields; Shopify Catalog Mapping if the data sits in tags or custom metafields |
| Price and availability | The OpenAI spec treats both as required. Shopify syncs them in real time | Inventory tracking on; retire dead variants |
| Images | Shown in the product carousel; the spec asks for an image of the actual variant | Assign images per variant |
| Returns, shipping and reviews | Separate fields in the OpenAI spec: return window, shipping price, review count, star rating | Settings > Policies, shipping rates, and a reviews app that publishes structured data |
Do reviews, return policy and shipping affect whether ChatGPT recommends you?
The platforms' own documents point that way. OpenAI's feed spec has dedicated fields for review count, star rating, store-level ratings, whether you accept returns, the return window in days, and shipping price. OpenAI's help article names reviews and price among the things ChatGPT considers. Shopify lists shipping speeds next to titles and pricing as data that agents use to decide what to recommend, and treats real-time pricing and inventory as trust signals.
Shopify also makes policies a gate. To be eligible for ChatGPT, your store needs a completed Terms of service, Privacy policy and Return and refund policy in Settings > Policies. If yours are still an old template, fix them before anything else.
- Returns: state the window in days and who pays return postage. A policy that says "contact us" gives a model nothing to compare.
- Shipping: set real rates and delivery estimates for US buyers, including any free-shipping threshold.
- Reviews: product ratings published as structured data on the page are easier to read than a widget that loads late. Reviews and discussion on other sites feed the answer too.
- Stock: keep inventory tracking switched on and remove variants you no longer make.
How can I check how my products appear in ChatGPT?
Start in your admin. Go to Sales channels > Agentic to see which AI channels are active for your store. Shopify says it attributes performance back to the originating AI channel in merchant dashboards, so orders from ChatGPT, Copilot and Google should show as separate sources once traffic starts.
Then test from the shopper's side. Run the prompts your customers would type, across a few categories and price points, and if you are outside the US, test from a US connection as well. Record which of your products appear, which competitors appear, and what ChatGPT says about price, reviews and delivery. Repeat monthly. In Profound's July 2026 sample, 450 of 517 brands lost at least a third of their ChatGPT shopping visibility within days of the model update, while 67 gained by the same margin.
Add a referral segment in GA4 or Shopify analytics for chatgpt.com and the other AI domains. It will not tell you why you were picked. It will tell you whether the channel is worth the catalog work.
What can't merchants control yet?
Quite a lot. Know these limits before you plan around the channel.
- Ranking. There is no bid, no paid boost inside organic results and no published scoring.
- Per-channel product choices. Shopify's documented options are blunt: deactivate Shopify Catalog access for ChatGPT entirely, which can take up to 7 days to apply, or set a product to Unlisted. Shopify also notes products can still surface through web crawling.
- Exclusions. Products on OpenAI's prohibited list will not display. Subscriptions, bundles, customisable products and B2B-only items cannot use direct checkout on Copilot, Google AI Mode or Gemini. B2B items gated by a third-party app may not be detected and could appear anyway.
- The words. The model summarises from your data and from what others say about you. Shopify's Knowledge Base app lets you supply brand answers, but the model still writes the sentence.
- Measurement on Google direct checkout. Shopify warns that Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire there, so expect reporting gaps.
What should UK, Canadian, Australian and Asian Shopify brands do now?
If you already ship to the US, you are probably in. Shopify's ChatGPT rule says your store must sell to US customers and can be based anywhere, so a brand in Melbourne, Manchester, Toronto or Singapore with a US market set up in Shopify can qualify today. Check Sales channels > Agentic, then run the field audit above on your US-facing catalog: US dollar prices, US shipping rates and a returns policy a US shopper can act on.
If you do not sell to the US, the Shopify route into ChatGPT is closed for now, but ChatGPT still answers shopping questions in your market. OpenAI rolled shopping results out to users in every region where ChatGPT is available in April 2025, and those answers draw on other feeds, retailers and the open web. Your products may surface through stockists and marketplaces instead of your own store, so make sure your retail partners' listings are accurate too.
Google is likely to open next. At Google Marketing Live 2026 it said UCP-powered checkout would reach Canada and Australia in the coming months and the UK later. Stores with clean Merchant Center feeds will be first in line.
- Give every product a category, barcode, material and variant images now. The same data feeds Merchant Center and every AI channel that follows.
- Publish a clear returns window and delivery times on each market's policy pages.
- Add an llms.txt and AGENTS.md file so agents crawling the web get a plain summary of your catalog and policies.
- Earn reviews and mentions on sites that matter in your market, because they are part of what ChatGPT reads.
