When a shopper asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Mode which brand to buy, the answer is built mostly from pages you do not own. Forum threads, review profiles, editorial roundups, YouTube videos and marketplace listings carry a large share of the weight. Your own product pages matter, and we covered how to make them citable in an earlier piece. This one covers the rest.

The mix of third-party sources also moves, sometimes by a lot in a single week. Reddit went from the most cited social source in Perplexity at the start of 2026 to a fraction of that by April. In August, ChatGPT stopped citing most Reddit threads within a few days. If your AI visibility rested on one platform, it swung with that platform.

The fix is a spread of earned mentions across several source types and markets, checked monthly. Below: what the data says, where studies disagree, and how to build that spread without breaking community rules or consumer law.

Where do AI answers get their information about brands?

Every major engine pulls from a blend of reference sites, community discussion, publishers, video and retailers, but each one weights them differently. Profound's analysis of 680 million citations between August 2024 and June 2025 found Wikipedia was ChatGPT's top source at 7.8% of all citations, while Reddit led both Perplexity (6.6%) and Google AI Overviews (2.2%). YouTube sat second on both Google AI Overviews and Perplexity.

Off-site signals also line up with visibility. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and found branded web mentions had a 0.664 correlation with appearing in AI Overviews, against 0.218 for backlinks. Brands in the top quarter for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview mentions, more than ten times the next quarter down. Correlation is not proof of cause. Still, the direction is consistent: engines repeat what the wider web already says about you.

So for a Shopify brand, find where your category gets discussed, reviewed and compared, and check whether you show up there in a way an engine can quote.

What changed in 2026?

Two separate events in 2026 show how fast the mix can change. Tinuiti tracks citations for commercial prompts across seven AI platforms and nine product categories, using a fixed prompt set. Its Q1 2026 report found Reddit made up 24% of all Perplexity citations in January. Its next report found Reddit at 25% in February and 7% in April. Tinuiti did not identify a cause. Over the same window, Reddit's share of Google AI Overviews citations rose from 5% to 7%, and YouTube citations in AI Mode more than quadrupled between January and April.

Then in August, ChatGPT changed. Otterly.AI compared 16 US brand reports across 14 industries and found daily Reddit citations in ChatGPT fell from an average of 497 to 132 after 14 August 2026, a drop of at least 73%. Three reports went to zero. Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity barely moved in the same window, and kept citing the threads ChatGPT dropped. Otterly says it can see outputs, not OpenAI's internal reasons.

The same Reddit thread can be a top source in one engine and invisible in another in the same week, and nobody outside the AI companies can tell you why or for how long. If your plan depends on one platform's retrieval choices, you do not control your plan. A brand that also has strong reviews, a few good editorial mentions and some video coverage loses one input when that happens, rather than most of its visibility.

Why do citation-share studies give different numbers?

You will see Reddit described as 2% of citations in one study and 60% in another. Both can be right, since they measure different things. Some count the share of all citations, so one answer with eight links counts eight times. Others count the share of responses that cite a domain at least once, which produces much larger numbers. Prompt sets differ too: commercial buying prompts pull more reviews and retailers, while informational prompts pull more Wikipedia. Then there is timing, market (most panels are US-only) and whether the tool is logged in.

Compare a source with itself over time. Do not compare one vendor's number with another's. That is why the chart above uses a single series.

Which off-site sources are worth the effort for a D2C brand?

Rank sources by what you control, how long they last, and how many engines use them. Reddit carries big upside and the highest volatility. Review platforms and marketplaces move slowly but are hard for any engine to ignore on buying prompts. Tinuiti, for example, found Amazon at 21% of Microsoft Copilot citations in April 2026.

Effort also depends on what you already have. A brand shipping thousands of orders a year with no review programme can fix that in a fortnight. A brand with no Reddit history needs months before anything it posts carries weight. Pick the two source types where you are weakest relative to competitors in the answers, and start there, rather than chasing whichever platform is in the news this month.

How do you earn each type of mention?

Start with the sources you control most and work outwards. Reviews come first: every order is a chance to earn one, and the count builds over time. Ask after delivery, not at checkout, make leaving a review take under a minute, and reply to every review, including the bad ones. Engines summarise patterns across many reviews, so a calm public reply to a recurring complaint can do more for you than another five-star rating.

Editorial roundups take longer. Find the ten or so best-of lists and gift guides that engines already cite for your category, by running your buying prompts and reading the source links. Those publications are your PR list. Send samples with a short fact sheet: what the product does, who it suits, price in local currency, and one honest limitation. Writers update these lists every year, so a missed slot this season is a target for the next.

Video and marketplaces sit in the middle. Seed product with creators who already review your category and let them say what they think. Keep marketplace listings accurate, because engines repeat price, sizing and stock details straight from them.

  • Month one: audit which sources the engines cite for your top 20 prompts in each market
  • Month two: fix review collection and reply to the backlog on the platforms that showed up
  • Month three: pitch the roundups and creators that appeared most often, and start genuine forum participation
  • Every month after: re-run the prompts and move effort towards the gaps

Do the sources differ by market?

Yes. Most published citation studies use US panels, so treat their rankings as a starting point. Google AI Mode reached India in June 2025 and the UK in July 2025, rolled out in English to 180 more countries in August, and added Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese and Korean in September. Engines answering a Japanese or Hindi prompt will draw on local sites. The examples below are the platforms we check first when we audit a market. Confirm them by running your own local prompts.

How can a brand use Reddit without breaking the rules?

Reddit's site-wide rules ban content manipulation, which covers spamming, vote manipulation and ban evasion, and each subreddit adds its own rules on self-promotion. Many communities ban it outright. Moderators and users spot coordinated accounts fast, and an engine cannot cite a thread the moderators removed.

Consumer law applies too. The US FTC rule on reviews and testimonials, in force since 21 October 2024, bans fake reviews and undisclosed reviews by company insiders. The UK CMA can fine up to 10% of global turnover for fake or concealed incentivised reviews. The ACCC in Australia says businesses must be open about commercial relationships. A staff member posting as a happy customer breaks all three.

  • Post from a clearly named brand or founder account, and say who you are in every product-related reply
  • Read each subreddit's rules first and ask moderators before posting anything promotional
  • Answer the question asked, including when a competitor is the better fit
  • Show up in threads about problems with your product, and fix them in public
  • Never buy upvotes, aged accounts or seeded threads, and never ask staff to post without disclosure
  • If you pay creators or give free product, require the disclosure the local regulator expects

How do you track brand mentions across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode?

Start with a fixed prompt set of 20 to 40 buying questions per market, written the way customers ask them, and run it monthly in each engine. Log whether you appear, which sources were cited, and how you were described. Paid trackers can automate this, but a spreadsheet works to begin with. Keep the prompts unchanged so you can read the trend.

Then add the signals the platforms give you. Google's Search Console added generative AI performance reports in June 2026, rolled out globally by September, showing impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page and country, though not clicks. ChatGPT appends utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it cites, so that traffic can sit in its own channel in GA4. Perplexity referrals show up as referral traffic.

  • Record the cited sources, not only your own mentions, because they tell you where to earn coverage next
  • Run prompts in local language and from the local market where you can
  • Flag any month where one source type supplies most of your citations
  • Compare with branded search and direct traffic to see if visibility is turning into demand

Key takeaways

  • AI answers about brands draw heavily on third-party sources: reviews, forums, editorial, video and marketplaces.
  • Source mixes shift fast. Reddit fell from 25% to 7% of Perplexity citations in two months, and ChatGPT cut Reddit citations by at least 73% in August 2026.
  • Citation studies disagree because they count different things. Compare each source with itself over time.
  • Build presence across at least three source types in every market you sell into, using local review sites and forums.
  • On Reddit, disclose who you are and follow each community's rules. Fake or undisclosed reviews breach US, UK and Australian law.
  • Track a fixed prompt set monthly and use Search Console's AI reports and ChatGPT's UTM tags as supporting data.
