Plenty of brands treat TikTok Shop as another sales channel, something to switch on alongside Amazon and their own Shopify store. The brands that make money on it treat it as an affiliate program with a checkout attached. Sales come from thousands of creators who post videos about your product, tag it, and earn a commission on every order that follows. Your own account and your ads matter, but the long tail of commissioned creators does most of the selling.

Plan it that way. The questions that decide profit are affiliate questions: how many samples you send, which creators get them, what commission you pay at each tier, and whether your margin can carry a referral fee, a commission and the cost of free product before you see a single order.

Below: where TikTok Shop operates in October 2026, how to connect it to Shopify, the economics of sampling with a worked example, commission tiers by creator size, how paid ads now work alongside creators, and when you should skip it, which includes Canada and Australia, where TikTok Shop is still not available.

Why does TikTok Shop work like an affiliate program?

On TikTok Shop, any eligible creator can add your product to their showcase and earn a commission when a viewer buys through their video or live stream. You set the rate. TikTok handles tracking, payment and checkout inside the app, so the shopper never leaves the feed and the creator never has to chase a payout.

Momentum Works' 2025 US data shows where the money comes from. Half of US GMV came through videos, 36% through the Shop tab and 14% through live streams, up from 10% a year earlier. For most brands, the bulk of those videos come from affiliate creators rather than their own account. The same report counted 15.4 million influencers and 803,500 stores in the US, and found that more than half of those stores recorded no sales at all.

Take that last number as a warning. Opening a store takes an afternoon. Getting creators to post, and to keep posting, takes months of work. TikTok gives you two tools for it:

  • Open collaboration: any qualified creator can promote your product at a public commission rate, and can request a free sample that you approve or decline.
  • Targeted collaboration: you invite specific creators, set a custom rate for each, and send samples to the ones you choose.
  • Most profitable programs run both. Open collaboration finds creators you would never have found. Targeted collaboration is where you put your best rates and your sample budget.

On TikTok Shop, any eligible creator can add your product to their showcase and earn a commission when a viewer buys through their video or live stream.

Where is TikTok Shop available in 2026?

Momentum Works counted 16 TikTok Shop markets in 2025. Southeast Asia is the biggest region, with US$45.6 billion of GMV, about 71% of the global total. Indonesia alone did US$13.1 billion, making it the second largest single market after the US.

In the US, the ownership question is settled for now. A joint venture led by Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX closed on 22 January 2026 and took over TikTok's US data security, algorithm and content moderation. Reporting on the deal says TikTok Shop and advertising stay with a ByteDance-owned US company, so for sellers the day-to-day platform has not changed.

Europe is growing as well. Germany, France and Italy opened on 31 March 2025, joining the UK, Ireland and Spain. For a UK brand, the same catalogue and creator playbook can extend into the EU, but each market needs its own creators who speak the language and know the local trends.

How do you connect a Shopify store to TikTok Shop?

The official TikTok app in the Shopify App Store is free and carries a 4.8 rating from more than 16,000 reviews. It syncs your catalogue to TikTok Shop, pushes inventory updates, brings TikTok Shop orders into your Shopify admin, installs the TikTok pixel and lets you build ads from the same place. Coverage differs by market, so confirm your country is supported in the app before you build a plan around it.

TikTok Shop orders show up in Shopify under their own sales channel. Report them separately from site revenue, otherwise creator sales get mixed into your blended return on ad spend and make your paid media look better than it is.

A few things trip brands up in the first month:

  • Inventory. TikTok orders draw from the same stock as your site. A video that takes off can sell out a SKU in a day, so set safety stock or a separate allocation for hero products.
  • Pricing. Listing higher on TikTok to cover fees makes the offer look worse to anyone who checks your site. Build the fees into the margin plan instead.
  • Product data. Creators sell from your listing, so titles, images and variant names need to be as clear on TikTok as on your PDP.
  • Fulfilment speed. TikTok tracks how quickly you dispatch and how often orders are cancelled, so agree handling times with your warehouse before launch.

What does a TikTok Shop sampling program cost?

Samples are your main acquisition cost on TikTok Shop. Creators rarely post about a product they have not held, and most samples never turn into a video that sells. You are paying for the product, the postage and the fees, then waiting to see which posts land.

On fees, TikTok's own Seller University lists a 6% referral fee on most US categories, and independent seller guides report a rise to 8% from 4 August 2026. Check your settlement statements. The example below uses 8% to stay conservative.

The worked example below uses hypothetical numbers, chosen to show the method. They are not benchmarks:

LinePer orderNotes
Selling priceUS$40.00Example price
Product cost-US$10.00Example 75% gross margin
Referral fee (8%)-US$3.20Use your actual rate
Creator commission (15%)-US$6.00Example open collaboration rate
Pick, pack and shipping-US$6.00Example
Contribution per orderUS$14.80Before samples, ads and returns
100 samples at US$16 eachUS$1,600Product plus postage
Orders needed to break even109US$1,600 divided by US$14.80, rounded up
Worked example (hypothetical): a US$40 skincare product on TikTok Shop USIllustrative only. Returns, discounts and ad spend all lower contribution further.

In this example, 100 samples need 109 orders before the program pays back. If 40 of those creators post and three of the videos sell well, you clear that with room to spare. If nobody's video takes off, you have bought US$1,600 of content you can still reuse in ads. Run the same sum with your own numbers before you approve a single sample request.

Two habits keep sample spend under control. First, set approval rules for open collaboration: minimum followers, a recent posting history in your category, and some prior GMV. Second, track sample-to-post rate and GMV per sample by creator, and stop sending to anyone who takes product and never posts.

What commission should you offer creators of different sizes?

There is no official TikTok benchmark by creator tier, and most published averages cannot be traced back to real data, so we do not quote them. The table below shows the starting points we use when we build a plan. Treat them as planning assumptions, then adjust to what your margin and your category can carry.

Creator sizeHow to recruitStarting commissionSamples
Nano (under 10K followers)Open collaborationYour standard public rate, for example 10-15%Only with approval rules
Micro (10K-100K)Targeted invitesA few points above your public rateYes, to creators with category history
Mid-tier (100K-500K)Targeted, often via an agencyHigher rate, sometimes with a small flat feeYes, plus a brief
Macro (500K+)Direct dealFlat fee plus commission, negotiatedYes, plus usage rights for ads
Starting points for TikTok Shop commission by creator size (D2C Prominence planning assumptions, not market benchmarks)Rates are examples to plan from. Your margin sets the ceiling.

The reasoning matters more than the exact percentages. Your public rate has to be high enough that small creators bother, but it applies to everyone, so it cannot be your best offer. Save the higher rates for creators who have already proven they can sell your type of product, and review them every month against GMV per creator. A flat fee only makes sense when a creator's past GMV in your category justifies it.

How should paid ads work alongside TikTok Shop creators?

Since July 2025, GMV Max is the default and only campaign type for TikTok Shop Ads. You can no longer create new Product, Video or LIVE Shopping Ads with TikTok Shop as the sales destination. GMV Max optimises toward total shop sales and picks creative, placements and bids automatically.

Brands tend to miss the creative source. Creators who turn on affiliate mass authorisation let every seller they work with run their affiliate posts as ads. In GMV Max you can choose affiliate posts as a video source, and you can set a separate Shop Ads commission rate for sales those ads drive. Creators get paid when your ad spend sells through their video, which gives them a reason to keep posting for you.

The strongest setup we see: creators find the winning angles organically, the best performing affiliate posts go into GMV Max, and the separate ads commission rate is set lower than your organic rate because you are paying for the reach. Watch how much GMV is ad driven versus organic in Seller Center, because a program that only sells when you pay for traffic is a paid media channel with extra fees.

When is TikTok Shop a bad fit for a Shopify brand?

TikTok Shop rewards products that are easy to show in a short video, sit at an impulse price and carry enough margin to pay everyone. It struggles when any of those are missing:

  • Thin margins. If your gross margin cannot absorb a referral fee, creator commission, sample costs and frequent platform promotions, every sale loses money.
  • Low order value. On a cheap product, shipping and samples eat the contribution. Bundles help.
  • High consideration products. Furniture, high-end tech and anything bought after weeks of research rarely convert inside a feed.
  • Restricted categories. Health, supplements and some beauty claims need approvals and careful creator briefs.
  • Markets without TikTok Shop. If your customers are in Canada or Australia, there is no local shop to sell through.

For Canadian and Australian brands, the creator affiliate model still works. You run it on your own Shopify store instead. Recruit creators through an affiliate network or creator platform that tracks sales to your site, pay them commission the same way, and use TikTok Spark Ads or Meta partnership ads to amplify their best posts. Brands that hold stock and a legal entity in the US or UK can also sell there through TikTok Shop, but that is a full market entry decision with its own stock, tax and returns costs.

Whichever route you take, measure it. Paying commission on sales that would have happened anyway is how most creator programs we audit lose money.

Key takeaways

  • TikTok Shop runs like an affiliate program: commissioned creators drive most sales, so plan it around samples and commission, not listings.
  • It is live in the US, UK, much of Europe, Southeast Asia and Japan. It is not available in Canada, Australia or India.
  • Model sample economics before you start. Work out how many orders it takes to repay your sample budget.
  • Keep your public commission sensible and save higher rates for creators with proven GMV in your category.
  • Feed winning affiliate posts into GMV Max with a separate, lower ads commission rate.
  • In Canada and Australia, run creators through an affiliate network to your Shopify store and amplify with Spark Ads or Meta partnership ads.
